Why wont vista detect my Maxtor One Touch II firewire and usb 300gb External Hard Drive?

I want to partition my hard drive but first, i want to backup my computer. I am running Vista ultimate 32-bit. i plugged the drive into the computer through the firewire AND the usb and vista still does nothing. Yes, i did plug it into the outlet also. Any suggestions?

have you tried getting windows to add it in the device manager?

without quotes:
-type "windows + r" to open the run dialogue box
-in the run dialogue box type "compmgmt.msc" and click open
-go to device management

If the device isn't already active:
-in the device management area right the root or one of the sub options, and get it to scan for hardware changes... you are hoping it will add it on its own here.

if it is already in the device manager, you may have to go to disk management and assign it a drive letter.
