USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port?
I am using a Dell Dimension 4400, WindowsXP. The PC came with 2 USB 1.0 ports. I wanted USB 2.0 speed.
Can I get USB 2.0 speed using an external hub/power source, with only USB 1.0 ports available?
So, I recently installed a hi-speed USB 2.0 PCI Host Controller. I then connected a Edgetech Diskgo 106 GB External Hard Drive for my music. All worked fine for a week. Today, I got the above message and smelled something burning. I have removed the Pci Card after burning out all 5 ports connecting the external hd. The ports really did fail. I did not get an error connecting my ipod to the PCI card.
Question: is this a problem I'll continue to have with PCI cards, or is my PC starting to fail?

Something to keep in mind is that one Usb Port only supplies so much power output (500mW if my memory is correct but don't quote me).
All of my external Usb Hard Drive actually come with a dual prong USB cord. One prong (USB Connection) for power and signal and the other prong for additional power from a different USB port so no burnout problem.
If you hooked to a USB port it worked then burned out, then another USB port and it worked and burned out, and continued until all ports burned out then yeah I would say you are going to continue to have the issue with that drive and cable. Solution: get a double cable for the drive. The card have enough power for the drive just not on a single plug.
As for your Ipod it uses much less electricity so not going to be an issue there.
