I have added an internal Sata Hard Drive to my desktop.How can I get my system to recongize it so i can format

I unplugged my first HDD and used the windows disc to create a partition and format it in NTFS. once that bit was done i stopped it, then switched off and reconnected the first HDD and all was fine when i rebooted, also did this on my mates pc yesterday and it was fine also
