Is Laptop Hard drive same as desktop hard drives?

I want to replace my hard drive but, thought that there could be two kinds of hard drives.

i would like to know that computer you are using. is it a desktop or a laptop? the hard drive for a laptop is smaller than the one for a desktop. at present, there are only two sizes of hard drives. the 3.5" and the 2.5: mentioned by one above me is the size of the platter inside the housing. it's not the width of the hard drive itself.
