Donât Dispose Off Your Old Computer At Home Yet

With prices falling and more powerful computers coming out about every 4-6 months, itâ€™s always tempting to get an upgrade of your current home PC. Whether itâ€™s just a new and more capacious Hard Drive, bigger memory, or a more powerful video card for those increasingly demanding PC games, upgrading have become part of owning a PC.

For many, upgrading can be a matter of getting an entire new PC, especially when you have a 2- year old PC that have missed all those technical improvements that came in bits and pieces over those 2 years. You may be better off getting a new one instead. 2-3 year old PCs cost more to upgrade today than they did a year ago.

You have new processors that wonâ€™t match the old motherboard, both in physical pins as well as BIOS set-up. You have new DDR2 Memory Modules that wonâ€™t match your motherboardâ€™s memory slots and if you happen to chance upon DDR1 memory chips that you can add to your current set, they cost twice than the new ones at the same memory size.

And Video Cards now need PCI-express slots where your old PCs only had AGP slots. Then thereâ€™s the new eSATA hard drives that wonâ€™t get their true value with older standard SATA controllers.

So what can you do with Your Old PC?

If your PC still works fine but have missed out on all those nifty innovative advances that now define what a minimum PC should be, here are some thoughts of what to do with them.

Use it as an Internet/email/chat station. Thereâ€™s a lot of truth in the saying that when youâ€™re online, youâ€™re always vulnerable to virus attack. Corporate installations have robust and nearly impenetrable firewalls in their front-facing servers that cost from a few hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars to install. You canâ€™t very well do that at home. Home-bound Anti-virus solutions can do a competent job but they can only filter out known virus defined in their database. But your PC becomes game to new virus that has yet to be recognized by your Anti-Virus Software.

Sounds cumbersome, but when you do get a virus infestation on your old PC, youâ€™ll thank yourself that your new PC where you get the most work done remains safely out of harmâ€™s way. Your old PC with a 2-year old processor and memory is more than enough to be an Internet and messaging station where you can download files, surf the net and do your emails, chats and social networking duties. Itâ€™s a lot better than many internet tablets, smartphones or netbooks out there.

Reserve your new PC for your home entertainment purposes like playing video or music files, editing images from your camera, working on office files and other tasks that donâ€™t need online access. If you need to get files attached to your email or you need to work on files downloaded from the net, just use your 8gb of 16 Gb Flash Drive to transfer files. There are also special software-assisted USB cables that can link your two PCs in a master-slave set-up so you can upload or download files quickly and easily by just dragging files across the two in a directory that shows the content of both, either on the new or old PCs. Just make sure the files have been cleaned by anti-virus software in either direction. That means you still need to install AV software on both machines. Even if your PC is not connected to the internet, files uploaded from a floppy or your colleagueâ€™s flash drive needs to be check for infection. GP
